A faster website and online ordering system for The Sea Chef in Hexham

The Sea Chef needed more than a fresh-looking restaurant website. It needed an ordering experience that made life easier for customers while reflecting how a busy local takeaway actually operates. We designed and developed a modern website with a custom collection-ordering system, built around one clear, mobile-friendly journey.

What Gary and Lesley said

The Sea Chef / Hexham

We contacted Dan at LineUp Digital as we wanted a local person to our business. Aswell as someone who would understand and listen to what we needed to give our customers an easy, hassle-free website. As busy business owners, it was essential that we could manage the day-to-day running of the website and be able to amend times, stock levels and ordering levels.

We asked for a simple, effective ordering website where customers could browse, place orders and make safe, secure payments.

LineUp Digital delivered on every aspect!

Communication was excellent and Dan was very responsive and helpful with our questions.

We were given a time frame for how long various aspects of the design would take and had regular updates.

02

A local reputation needed a better digital experience

The Sea Chef is a long-established local takeaway serving customers from Priestlands Estate in Hexham. Its website had an important job to do: help regular and new customers find the right information quickly, view the menu and place a collection order without unnecessary friction.

For a takeaway, a website cannot be treated as a static online brochure. Ordering demand changes throughout the day, kitchen capacity is limited, opening hours can be split across lunch and evening service, and customers need to know exactly when their food will be ready.

The project therefore combined two closely connected pieces of work:

  1. 01A clearer, more modern website that represented the business properly.
  2. 02A purpose-built online ordering journey shaped around The Sea Chef’s real collection process.

This made the project both a restaurant web design job and a practical business-systems project.

03 / The challenge

Make ordering feel simple without ignoring operational reality

The front-end experience needed to be straightforward for customers, but the logic behind it had to account for the realities of a working takeaway.

The new experience needed to:

  • Make the menu easy to browse on a phone.
  • Let customers easily choose variations and extras.
  • Keep the basket visible and make the next step obvious.
  • Offer collection times that reflect available capacity.
  • Support split opening hours and date-specific changes.
  • Take payment securely online.

04 / The solution

From menu choice to collection slot in one clear journey

We created a focused website that puts the main customer task, placing an order, at the centre of the experience.

The homepage quickly explains what The Sea Chef offers and gives customers a prominent route into the menu. From there the ordering journey starts. The shop owners have full control over the menu, categories, images, product options, upsells, discounts, slots, stock levels, etc.

Once customers have chosen their food, the checkout brings the important steps together: confirm the basket, choose an available collection time, enter contact details and complete payment.

The result is a restaurant ordering system that feels simple on the surface while handling more detailed operational rules behind the scenes.

A menu designed for quick mobile decisions

Most takeaway orders are made when customers are hungry, often using a phone and often with little patience for a complicated interface.

The menu experience was designed to make ordering fast and predictable:

  • Clear food categories reduce unnecessary scrolling.
  • Product names and prices are easy to scan.
  • Options and add-ons appear at the point they are needed.
  • Basket totals update as the order is built.
  • The route to checkout remains obvious.
  • Responsive layouts keep controls usable on smaller screens.

The interface avoids unnecessary steps and keeps the customer focused on completing the order.

Collection slots that match the way the shop works

Timed collection was a core part of the build.

Rather than showing a generic list of times, the website presents live collection availability based on lead time, capacity and the opening hours for the selected date. This helps connect the customer-facing experience with what the team can realistically prepare.

The system also supports:

  • Live capacity updates to control order flow.
  • Date-specific opening-hour changes.
  • Planned closures.
  • A final cooking cut-off before closing.

The Sea Chef staff are able to completely control the orders coming in from ensureing that all of their customers are served when they can be.

06

Secure payment in the same branded experience

Customers can move from the menu to checkout and pay online without leaving the main Sea Chef experience.

Keeping the ordering journey together gives the business a clearer digital storefront and makes the process feel more consistent from the first menu choice through to order confirmation.

The checkout was designed to keep the information requested from the customer focused and relevant, with clear messaging around the selected collection time, contact details and payment.

A admin area that gives the team full control

The admin area gives the team a wider operational view of incoming orders and day-to-day controls.

The admin abilties of this system are huge. We built in the following fo the Sea Chef team:

  • Live order view so the team can prepare orders in the orders instantly
  • Historical view and reporting to help the team understand the ordering patterns and financial performance
  • Simple product management to add, edit and delete products and categories
  • Grouped option management to create sets of options that can be applied to products
  • Opening hours and collection slot management to control the order flow

The admin area is a powerful tool for the Sea Chef team to manage their business and the ordering process. Since launch the team use it daily to keep everything running smoothly.

07

Built for a real Hexham business

We are based in Prudhoe, Northumberland, close to Hexham. That local connection helped keep the project practical and collaborative.

The goal was not to force The Sea Chef into a generic website package. It was to understand how customers order, how collection service works and where a digital system could remove friction.

The Sea Chef project is a good example of our approach to web design for Hexham businesses: start with the customer journey and the operational problem, then build the website and technology around both.

For businesses with more specialised ordering requirements, we can design and develop custom online ordering systems that account for products, options, availability, payments and business-specific workflows.

08 / The outcome

A clearer digital experience for a trusted local business

The completed project gives The Sea Chef:

  • A modern, responsive website on its own domain.
  • A faster and clearer route from menu browsing to checkout.
  • A custom online collection-ordering experience.
  • Live collection availability based on operational rules.
  • Secure online payment.
  • A stronger presentation of its location, opening hours and contact information.
  • A flexible foundation for menu, schedule and service changes.
  • A digital experience that better reflects a trusted local business.

09

Why the project matters

A good business website should not stop at looking professional.

For The Sea Chef, the most valuable part of the project was connecting the public-facing website with a real operational process. The system helps customers decide what they want, understand when it can be collected and complete payment in one place.

That same principle applies beyond restaurants and takeaways. Ordering workflows can be shaped around stock, production time, collection capacity, customer type, service area, product configuration or internal approval.

The right website can become a useful part of how a business runs, not just a page that describes it.

Questions about similar projects

Can you build an online ordering system for a restaurant or takeaway?

Yes. We can design the customer-facing website and build the ordering workflow around products, options, collection or delivery rules, availability and online payment. The scope depends on how your business operates and which existing systems need to be retained or connected.

Do you work with businesses in Hexham and Northumberland?

Yes. We are based in Prudhoe, Northumberland, and work with businesses in Hexham, Newcastle and across the wider North East, as well as clients elsewhere in the UK.

Can you replace an existing ordering website?

Yes. We can review the existing website, ordering process, domain, content and search visibility before planning a rebuild. Where URLs change, the project should include redirect mapping and migration checks to protect existing traffic as far as reasonably possible.

What about my ePOS system?

We can integrate with your ePOS system to sync product data, prices, stock levels, orders and payments. This allows you to use your existing system for day-to-day operations while leveraging the online ordering system for online sales. The integration is custom-built to your needs and can include features like order tracking, inventory management, and payment processing.
